INDIANAPOLIS – An unexpected injury early in the week forced Spring Arbor University's competitive cheer team into rapid problem-solving mode – reworking key sections of their routine with only three days to prepare. But instead of folding under pressure, the Cougars embraced the challenge and put together two determined performances at Marian University, earning second place in both rounds against the host school.
With the lineup suddenly shifting days before competition, underclassmen and veterans alike rose to the occasion. Freshman
Lexy VanGelder was called into a stunting role sooner than expected, showing remarkable composure and adaptability. Senior
Sarah de La Grange, drawing on her experience, stepped back into a previous role to help stabilize the routine.
The last-minute adjustments could have rattled any team, but Spring Arbor responded with focus and resilience.
Although overall scores weren't exactly where Spring Arbor hoped to land, the performance revealed several promising strengths. Standing and running tumbling continue to trend upward, showcasing improved technique and confidence. Their jump scores proved they can compete with top-level programs.
These bright spots highlight a team on the rise – one that is building depth, skill, and synergy with every outing.
Despite nerves, pressure, and a hectic week of reworking choreography, team members walked away proud of their efforts and excited for what's ahead.
Freshman
Lexy VanGelder, who filled a critical role on short notice, shared: "I went into it a little nervous, but I feel like once we really slowed down and we went into our second-round things got way more under control and we did pretty good. As a team I think we really fought hard, and it really showed in our second round."
Mackenzie Kapustka also emphasized the team's resilience: "I was proud of my performance today and the growth within our stunt group. For the team, I think we really came together and stepped up despite the challenges we faced before going into the competition."
Senior
Sarah de La Grange, who stepped into a familiar role to strengthen the routine, noted the team's perseverance: "I feel really good about everything that I did. There are definitely a few things that I'm excited to improve upon. I think the team did well today too, especially after we had a hard week at practice moving things around, and I think that we really persevered through that."
Spring Arbor's showing at Marian University wasn't just about placements – though two second-place finishes reflect solid competitiveness. It was a testament to their flexibility, their trust in one another, and their commitment to growth even in difficult circumstances.
If the Cougars continue building on their tumbling strengths, leaning on their emerging leaders, and embracing the grit they displayed this week, they are poised for strong performances as the season continues.
Next up the competitive cheer team is at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 6-7.
