Smith leads Cougars past Leafs

Tristen SmithThe Spring Arbor University women's basketball team started off the new year on a solid note, with a convincing wire to wire performance that resulted in a 72-50 victory over the visiting Goshen College Maple Leafs on Wednesday.

Junior Tristen Smith led the way with easily her best performance of the season thus far, pouring in 20 points on 7 for 13 from the floor and 4 for 5 from the charity stripe. Fellow juniors Jen Moor and Lyndsey Norman also scored in double digits for Spring Arbor, racking up 15 and 13 points respectively. Norman also hauled down a game high six rebounds in the contest.

The Cougars won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding the Maple Leafs 39-24 and holding the MCC's leading rebounder Cassie Greives to just five boards, nearly four rebounds below her nightly average.

Spring Arbor played consistently throughout the game and shot 48% in the first half and 44% in the second. The Lady Cougars built a fourteen point lead at halftime and stretched it our to 28 points at one point in the second half.

All eleven available players saw significant minutes for Spring Arbor.

The win pushes the Lady Cougar's record to 7-9 on the season while Goshen falls to 6-9 overall.
