FT. WAYNE, IN - The Spring Arbor University Cougars picked up a nice conference road victory on Tuesday night with a 78-71 win over the University of St. Francis Cougars. SAU is now 2-0 in Mid Central College Conference play and tied with Bethel atop the leader board. Overall, Spring Arbor improves to 10-2 with eight of their 12 games being played on the road.
SAU shot a blistering 64 percent from the field for the game including an astounding 72 percent in the first half as they built a 43-27 lead at intermission. Senior Kevin Ludwig (Holland/West Ottawa) scored 15 points in the first twenty minutes of action on seven-of-eight shooting but suffered a gash on his head in the opening moments of the second stanza that required several stitches to close and he would not return. Senior back court mate Josh Brandt (Flint/Powers) pumped in a team high 21 points on seven-for-ten shooting while junior Rob Boss (Brighton/Brighton), who was limited to just 19 minutes due to foul trouble, netted 15 points while connecting on 5-for-6 field goals . Sophomore DJ Baisden (Munith/Jackson Christian) and junior Jared List (Frankenmuth/Frankenmuth) chipped in with 12 and 10 points.
"I was very proud of our guys. To get a road conference win without Kevin playing in the second half and Boss spending major minutes on the bench was big for us," said head coach Ryan Cottingham.
Spring Arbor will play a non-league game on Saturday when they travel to long-time rival Albion College. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
