The Spring Arbor University men's basketball team suffered their first defeat of the season as they fell to the Siena Heights University Saints, 61-56, on Tuesday night. Trailing 28-25 at halftime the final 20 minutes was a back-and-forth affair that would come down to the final minute. Behind by two points SAU was unable to connect on a pair of free throws with 45 seconds remaining and then missed on an open three-point attempt with six seconds to play that would have tied the game.
Senior Rob Boss (Brighton/Brighton) and junior Willie Pickvet (Pinconning/Pinconning) led the Cougars with 12 points apiece. Seniors Jared and Aaron List (Frankenmuth/Frankenmuth) chipped in with nine and eight points respectively.
Head Coach Ryan Cottingham had a few comments about the game: "We did not do a good job defending on the perimeter (Siena connected on 8-of-15 three point attempts) and we didn't take care of the basketball (18 turnovers). You've got to be really solid on the road and we were too inconsistent."
A busy and challenging week continues for SAU (3-1) as they travel to Kalamazoo Wednesday night for an exhibition game against the Western Michigan University Broncos. The Cougars will have one day to rest before hosting the MCC/WHAC Challenge on Friday and Saturday. Indiana Wesleyan joins Spring Arbor from the Mid-Central College Conference and Cornerstone and Aquinas will represent the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.
