No Grace for Spring Arbor

On Saturday, the Spring Arbor Women's Soccer Team faced off against the Grace Lancers for the Midwest Regional Final match. The game went into double overtime and then to a shootout, where the Cougars lost to Grace, 3-4.

Both teams knew this game would not be easy with both wanting the win badly. Both teams fought hard to the finish. In the first half, the tension ran high. The score remained at zeroes even though there were some close calls. Spring Arbor was outshot 3-2 in the first half, but the second half was a different story.

The Cougars outshot Grace, 8-2, and had some great chances at net. Junior Kristin Abbott rocketed a shot from about 25 yards out that dinged off the cross bar. SAU was able to get up and around the Lancer defense many times but wasn't able to find the back of the net. At the end of a grueling 90 minutes, the game would go into overtime. Each team had a chance at net in the first overtime but the second overtime was pretty uneventful. Both teams were exhausted and the will to win is what kept them going.

Knowing the end was near, the teams lined up for penalty kicks. The score was still even after the first round of shooters due to great saves by both keepers. It was up to the second round of shooters to determine the win. The first shot for SAU resulted in an unlucky bounce off both posts and the ball rolled along the line, but never crossed it. Grace finished the game with their first and last shooter.

SAU put up a great fight and a great season. With many injuries holding them back, they still adjusted and came together as a team. Spring Arbor is proud of the obstacles they overcame and the effort they put forth. The Cougars end their season at 12-6-3.
