SAU Finish Trojans

Over the weekend the women's Spring Arbor University soccer team was victorious in their first play-off game in the MCC conference tournament against Taylor University. Despite winds up to 25 miles per hour interfering with the pace of play, the Lady Cougars were able to control the match for a 1-0 win.

While neither team was able to score in the first half, Spring Arbor dominated the battle for possession and allowed the Trojans few offensive opportunities. Taylor was only able to tally three shots in the first half while SAU more than doubled their shots with 7 in the first forty five minutes.

In the second half although the Cougars won the battle of territory, they struggled to finish their opportunities with the Trojans relying on counter attacks to produce their attack. It was in the 61st minute that Spring Arbor was able to score the game winning goal. Senior Becca Szopo beat her mark on the right side of the field and served a lofted cross to junior Kristin Abbott who was able to settle the ball and shoot it past the Taylor keeper. The goal marked Abbott's eighth goal of the season.

"Today showed the girls what tournament play is all about," commented head coach Jason Crist. "When it comes to conference play-offs winning games is about who wants it more and finishing the opportunities you get. It is a lesson that we will have to take to our next match against Indiana Wesleyan this weekend."

The SAU women's soccer team will continue their quest to win the MCC conference title this Saturday away at Indiana Wesleyan University. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
