A pair of clutch free throws with less than a second left in regulation by Spring Arbor University freshman Alex Glenn tied the Lady Cougar's Mid Central Conference opener against Marian University at 45, sending the contest into overtime. Unfortunately for Spring Arbor, the Knights outscored the Cougars 5-4 in the five minute overtime period to take home a 50-49 road victory.
Spring Arbor trailed for most of the second half before going on a 6-0 run late in the stanza to set up Glenn's heroics.
Glenn led the Lady Cougars with eleven points in the contest while Melissa Tejkl picked up nine and Kelly Bruggeman chipped in with eight.
The Cougars won the battle of the boards (33-29) but committed 19 turnovers in the contest, compared to just 11 for the Knights.
Spring Arbor also connected on just 13 of 24 free throws in the game.
"We made some improvements tonight, but I still can't help but feel that we let one get away," commented SAU head coach Tara Kreklau. "We need to shoot a better percentage from the free throw line and take better care of the basketball, especially in a tough conference like the MCC."
The loss drops the Lady Cougars to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in the MCC standings.
The Lady Cougars are back in action on Saturday when they welcome Albion College to campus for a non-conference tilt. The game is scheduled to tip off at 1:00 p.m.
