Lady Cougars Drop USF 5-1

The Spring Arbor University women's soccer team finished their 2010 MCC regular season campaign with a 5-1 victory over the University of St. Francis on Wednesday.

In a game that featured wind gusts in excess of 45 mph, SAU lost the opening coin flip and was forced to play the first half directly into the wind.

The Cougars were able to create several good chances in spite of the handicap, and were able to notch the opening goal of the contest in the 27th minute when Kristin Abbott blasted home the rebound of a Karly Linton shot to make the score 1-0.

Maegan Smith would net the eventual game winner in the 42nd minute.  The Hickory Corners, MI native collected a drop pass from Linton and sidefooted a low shot to the far side of the net to make the score 2-0.

After passing out two assists, Linton got into the scoring action herself, taking a pass from Abbott in the 50th minute and firing a low effort into the far post to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead.

USF clawed one back in the 52nd minute when they were awarded a penalty kick, making the score 3-1.

Spring Arbor continued to apply pressure and put the game on ice three minutes later when sophomore Cheyenne Martinez-Trevino registered her first goal in a Cougar uniform, heading a Jessica Clarke service past the USF goalkeeper to make the score 4-1.

Freshman Brooklyn Morgan collected her first collegiate goal in the 72nd minute to round out the scoring.  Morgan received a through ball from sophomore Megan Wegener and hit a low rocket to the near post to finish the scoring at 5-1.

Spring Arbor outshot USF 15-8 and put 11 of their shots on net.

SAU finsihes their regular season 14-4 and with a 7-1 mark in MCC loop play.  The Cougars will be the #2 seed for the upcoming MCC post season tournament.  SAU will host Bethel College in the opening round on Saturday.  The game will kick off at 1:00 p.m.  Spring Arbor beat Bethel 7-0 earlier this season.
