Cougars Down Trojans 2-0 to remain Atop MCC Standings

The Spring Arbor University women's soccer team used a goal in each half to notch their fifth straight MCC victory tonight, as the Lady Cougars (12-1-1 / 5-0) dropped Taylor University (7-3-2 / 2-2-1) in their first ever game under the lights on the new SAU soccer complex.

Freshman Olivia Clark scored her third goal in the past two games on an assist from sophomore Karly Linton in the 15th minute of play, but the two teams seesawed back and forth in the midfield with neither able to make many dangerous chances for the rest of the opening period.

The Cougars were able to make some adjustments at halftime and were much more successful attacking the Trojan back line in the second half.  After a series of attacks that finished with Maegan Smith in behind the Taylor defense on several consecutive occasions, the MCC's leading goalscorer cashed in on an opportunity to put the game on ice for SAU.  Smith, who is the reigning MCC Offensive Player of the Week, ran on to a through ball from Braydan Wiles, who is the reigning MCC Defensive Player of the Week and buried a right footed effort to the far post side netting in the 65th minute to give the Cougars the 2-0 decision.

"What's good about tonight is that we saw Taylor's best," commented SAU head coach Jason Crist.  "Our players had to grind it out against a good team who brought their very best effort to our field.  We will be better moving forward because of tonight. I thought we played very hard in the second half, and defensively we did a nice job with their forwards.  Our back four were spot on."

SAU goalkeeper Brooklyn Morgan registered her fourth consecutive shutout, as SAU has outscored MCC opponents 16-1 so far this season.

The #10 ranked Cougars sit atop the MCC standings at 5-0 and will travel to Grace College to take on the Lancers on Saturday.  Grace is 3-1-1 in the MCC and 8-5-1 overall and sits in third place in the MCC tables.
