Cougars Use Early Goals to Defeat St. Francis

The Spring Arbor University women's soccer team scored a goal on each of their first three shots, and four goals on their first five attempts in a 9-1 victory over the University of St. Francis in the quarterfinal round of the MCC tournament on Saturday.

Maegan Smith opened the scoring for SAU in the third minute of play and completed her fifth hat trick of the season prior to 25 minutes expiring in the match, before being pulled for the day.  Smith leads all scorers in the Mid Central Conference with 23 goals this season.

Karly Linton also registered a hat trick for SAU from her attacking midfield position.  The three tallies brings Linton's total to twelve markers for the season.  Linton and Smith each also passed out an assist in the contest.

Notching solo goals for the Cougars were Megan Wegener and freshmen Becca Lynn and Megan Colby.

Lynn, Courtney Harrison, Braydan Wiles, Ashley DeNio, Brooklyn Morgan and Megan Rosenberger were each credited with one assist in the game for SAU.

SAU out-shot USF 24-7 for the match as both teams emptied their benches before the halftime intermission.

Spring Arbor moves to 16-2-1 with the win and will welcome Marian University next Saturday for a semi-final match.  Marian defeated Huntington University 2-1 in the 4 vs. 5 match up today.  St. Francis finishes their season at 8-11 overall.
