Buzzer Beater Clips Spring Arbor

SPRING ARBOR, MI - It was a matter of pay backs of sorts tonight as Roosevelt University (Chicago, IL) scored a buzzer beater to defeat Spring Arbor 60-58. The Cougars held the lead throughout most of the game, but Sierra Dunner of Rochester grabbed a rebound and put a shot back with less than a second remaining to give the Lakers (1-2) the two points it needed for the win.

Last year, when these two teams met in Chicago, Roosevelt led most of the game only to see their lead evaporate and Spring Arbor heading home with a 78-71 win.

Spring Arbor led by as many as nine points in the game on two separate occasions and the latest with 8:30 mark in the second half. But the lead would shrivel to two points with 6:00 minutes left. The game would remain close and with 2:42 left, the Laker's Casey Davis connected on a two point shot to cut Spring Arbor's lead to one (57-56)

Missed shots by both teams and a foul on Roosevelt's Alexia Tann would send Ashley Stelter to the line with 1:19 left where she would hit one of two free throws and give Spring Arbor a two point lead.

A Laker bucket with a minute left would tie the game up and set up the dramatic finish of the game. A mishandle of the ball by Angela Russell would give the Lakers a shot to take the lead and a couple of missed shots and failed put-backs by Roosevelt would keep the Cougars in the game. The frantic series was ended by Russell grabbing the rebound with 14.8 seconds left.

With a chance to take the lead, the Cougars drive to the hoop would end with a turnover and steel by the Lakers with 8.4 seconds remaining. A long 3-pointer from the Laker's Casey Davis would carom off the rim into Sierra Dunner's hands and she put it back with less than a second for the game winner.

Russell led all scorers in the game with 22 points and five rebounds. After four games this year, Russell is averaging 14.8 points per contest.

"I thought we gave a pretty good effort all the way around tonight," stated Coach Ryan Frost. "It was a tough way to end things. We need to learn how to handle the pressure better, and we will. This is all part of the learning process and we'll move on and grow from this and get better because of it."

Spring Arbor will play Madonna University on Tuesday night in Livonia, MI. Game time is 7:30 pm.
