Smith Remains Red Hot; Cougars Trounce Trojans 5-1

Spring Arbor University junior Maegan Smith remained red hot, notching her second consecutive hat trick as the Lady Cougar soccer team breezed by the Trinty International University Trojans 5-1 in their first ever game on the newly rennovated SAU soccer complex Saturday evening. Smith has seven goals in three games, accounting for 70% of the SAU's 10 goal total for the season.

The Hickory Corners, Michigan native needed just over sixty seconds to find the opening goal, as sophomore Karly Linton played her in behind the Trojan back line in the second minute and Smith slotted a low ball past the TIU netminder Elizabeth Burynski. Smith notched her second marker in the thirteenth minute, taking a service from Cheyenne Martinez-Trevino and beating Burynski in the upper right corner of the net.

Martinez-Trevino got in on the action herself in the 21st minute when she flew forward from her left back position and smashed a Karly Llinton crossing ball past Burynski. Smith completed the trifecta eight minutes later when Linton once again found her through the defense.

Trinity International clawed one back just before halftime on an unassisted effort by senior Diana Anderson, but Megan Wegener iced the game for Spring Arbor early in the second half when freshman Becca Lynn slid her through on the width before the junior hit a screamer to the far upper corner to make the score 5-1.

"We are certainly pleased with this result," commented SAU head coach Jason Crist whose Cougars outshot the Trojans 29-8. "Trinity is a quality team and we have a lot of respect for them. They just returned from a trip out west where they lostnarrowly 1-0 to the #3 team in the NAIA.Our players were able to put aside some injuries in order to get this win. Everyone contributed, so it was a very gratifying game."

The Cougars pushed their record to 2-0-1 with the win and will get some much needed time off before facing off with Olivet Nazarene University next Friday at 5:00 p.m.
