Cougars Upset Pilots

SPRING ARBOR, MI - Heading into tonight's match with fourth place Bethel College, the women's tennis team (6th place) needed to upset the Pilots for any hope to earn a home match for next week's MCC Tournament. With inclement weather on the way, Coach Peggy Calderone decided to put the singles matches on the courts first.

The strategy worked as all six singles matches were either won by Spring Arbor, or were leading by the Cougars.

Officially, the Cougars won the match 5-0. At 1 singles Kelly Smith rallied after losing the first set 2-6 to win the match 6-1, 6-3. Kristin DeBruyn won big at 2 singles 6-2, 6-1. Becca Kragt was up at 3 singles 6-4, (inc) at 3 singles. Hope Roelofs won at 4 singles 6-4, 6-2, and Jenna Bart won at 6 singles 6-0, 6-0.

The doubles matches were deferred in order for the Men's matches against Bethel to get started before the weather.

The win improved the Cougars record to 3-5 overall and 3-4 in MCC play while the Pilots dropped to 6-4 and 3-4 in the MCC.

The Lady Cougars will finish Conference play on Thursday afternoon against St. Francis. Play will start at 4:00 on the courts in Spring Arbor.
