SPRING ARBOR, MI - The Lady Cougars started their final regular season tennis match at 4:00 pm inside due to the rain on Thursday afternoon. After six hours of tennis on the two indoor courts, and several pizzas later, they finally had the results that Coach Peggy Calderone was hoping for; a win.
Spring Arbor defeated the University of St. Francis 5-2.
Starting with the doubles lineup the Cougars of Spring Arbor were down 1-2 after the #1 and #3 lost and the #2 doubles team of Hope Roelofs and Kristin DeBruyn won 8-4.
The singles lineup turned things around for Spring Arbor as the Ladies swept the first four spots to secure the win. Needing five points to win a match, the other match on the court was pulled.
At one singles, Kelly Smith rallied after a first set tie-breaker loss to win 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-3. Kristen Debruyn bested her opponent at #2 singles 6-0, 6-1, Becca Kragt won at #3 7-5, 6-3, and Hope Roelofs won the deciding match at #4 singles, late into the night 6-1, 3-6, 6-2
After a disappointing 1-4 Conference start, the Ladies have won three in a row to level their record for the MCC Conference at 4-4. Now the ladies will be in "wait and see" mode as the rest of the conference finish on Saturday to see who and where they will start the MCC Conference Tournament which starts on Monday.
