SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – With the score tied at 69-69 between Spring Arbor and Olivet College and 8.0 seconds remaining, Chris Bellamy drove the lane through traffic and put up an off-balance layup with time running out. Bellamy got the shooter's bounce and the ball fell through the hoop as the buzzer sounded to lift the Cougars to a 71-69 win over the Comets.
While no game this early in the season would be considered a "must win" game, this one had the feeling of one. Spring Arbor started the season winning four of the first five games but had lost the last three. The win today righted the ship.
It didn't look good for the Cougars for much of the game as the Comet's Garner Small had the hot hand early hitting the first bucket of the game and Olivet held the lead for the entire first half by as many as 12 points. Small scored 18 points in the first half alone to give Olivet a 45-34 lead at the break.
Spring Arbor held Small to only four points in the second half while Bellamy and Rob Hogans combined for 23 points in the last 20 minutes for the come-from-behind victory.
Bellamy scored a game high 23 points including 12 of 15 from the line and pulled down a game high eight rebounds in the process.
Hogans added 22 points and hauled in seven rebounds and swatted three shots including a huge block with 14 seconds left. Olivet's DaunTrell Hill was driving for a layup to take the lead and Hogans soared in from behind and smacked the ball off the backboard for the block.
Matt Van Pelt dished out seven assists while only giving up one turnover for another very strong performance by the senior point guard. Greg Hamilton was the third Cougar in double digits adding 11 points.
The win improved Spring Arbor to 6-4 on the season and will be heading to Hope College this weekend for the Holland Sentinel/Russ DeVette Classic. They will face Grace Bible on Friday night for a 6:00 tip. The Cougars will take on either the winner, or loser of the Hope College Covenant College (TN) game played after Spring Arbor's game. Saturday's game will take place at either 1:00 or 3:00.
