Cougars Top Taylor 4-0

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University women's soccer team earned its ninth straight win after defeating Taylor University 4-0 on Saturday night in Crossroads League action.

Freshman sensation Aubrey Schierbeek scored twice to lead the 10th ranked Cougars (13-1-1, 7-0 Crossroads League) while goalkeepers Sarah Yancer and Ashley Timmons combined to post the clean sheet – the 10th of the season.

Schierbeek opened the scoring in the 9th minute when she took a cross from sophomore Corrie Good and tucked a shot into the left corner past the TU goalkeeper.

Taylor (6-5-4, 3-3-1 Crossroads League) settled in after the slow start and managed to keep the margin at one for most of the half. However, a Trojan miscue in the final minute of the period proved costly as the Cougars were able to add on to their lead just before halftime. The TU keeper came to the edge of the box to grab a loose ball with Renee Broekhuizen closing in quickly. The keeper would drop the ball and Broekhuizen collected it and fired a shot at the empty net, but her attempt was blocked by a defender, who made a tremendous sliding stop to keep the ball out of the goal. Sophomore Alyssa Joseph gained possession, though, and lobbed a pass to the back post where Abbey Fuller was waiting and the freshman tapped it in to give SAU a 2-0 advantage.

In the second half, the Cougars would put the game out of reach with Schierbeek's second tally of the match. Schierbeek intercepted a defender's pass intended for the TU netminder and ripped a shot to the far post at the 60:13 mark.

Joseph would cap off the night with her third goal of the season in the 84th minute. Senior Courtney Harrison played a ball deep down field that was flicked on by Broekhuizen, creating a one-on-one chance for Joseph against the Taylor keeper. Joseph would get around the keeper with some nice footwork and deposited the ball into the open goal.

The Cougars racked up 22 shots while holding Taylor to five. Yancer finished the night with two saves while Timmons stopped the only shot she faced.

Spring Arbor will visit Indiana Wesleyan University on Wednesday, Oct. 22 before returning home to close out the regular season against the University of Saint Francis on Saturday, Oct. 25.
