SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team suffered a 66-54 setback at the hands of Indiana-University South Bend on Tuesday evening inside the SAU Fieldhouse.
The Cougars rallied back from a double-digit deficit to take a five point lead midway through the second half, but a 17-2 run by the Titans over a six minute span was enough to put the game out of reach.
Sophomore Kylie Townsley led the way for SAU with 17 points while classmate Rachel Driesenga registered her second straight double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
After falling behind quickly 4-0, Indiana-South Bend, who is receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 poll, answered with 12 straight points to grab an eight point lead midway through the half. The Cougars would continue to chip away at the deficit and only trail by just four, 29-25, at the break.
Spring Arbor opened the second half on fire hitting four of their first six shots. Townsley and Driesenga combined for nine points during a 12-5 run to retake the lead 37-34 at the 16:14 mark. The Cougars would eventually push the margin to five, 44-39, with 12:27 on the clock, but would go ice cold from the field allowing the visitors to put together a lengthy run and build an insurmountable lead.
In addition to her 17 points, Townsley recorded seven steals and six rebounds. Sophomore Aimee Konkel chipped in seven points and three assists while senior Lindsey Burnside added six points and four boards.
Indiana-South Bend connected on 50 percent (25-for-25) of its shots while limiting the Cougars to 32 percent (23-for-72) shooting. The Titans also held a slight edge in rebounds, grabbing 43 compared to SAU's 37. Spring Arbor forced IUSB into 26 turnovers, but was unable to capitalize on the opportunities.
Spring Arbor (1-3) will host No. 16 Siena Heights University next on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. before beginning a three-game road stretch.
