Hewitt Scores Career-High as Cougars Cruise

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Senior Collin Hewitt scored a career-high 17 points to lead the Spring Arbor University men's basketball team to an 85-56 victory over Great Lakes Christian College on Thursday night in non-conference action.

All 12 Cougars reached the scoring column with Jimmy Kodet and Isaac Love joining Hewitt in double figures, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively. Kodet and Love also finished as the team's top rebounders, hauling in seven and six boards apiece.

The two teams went back and forth for the first 16 minutes of the contest. The lead changed hands six different times before a three-pointer from sophomore Caleb Hogans put the Cougars in front for good at the 3:48 mark.

Some hot shooting kept Great Lakes Christian close, but with less than three minutes remaining in the opening period, SAU used an 8-0 run – highlighted by back-to-back triples from Hewitt – to grab a 37-27 advantage. The Cougars would take their 10 point lead into locker room up 40-30 at halftime.

Spring Arbor put the game away early in the second half, extending the lead to 16 at the 15:05 mark following a bucket from freshman Zach Medendorp. The Cougars maintained a comfortable margin the rest of the way, leading by as many as 30 points, 82-52, after a huge put-back dunk by Kodet late in the game.

The Cougars shot 52 percent (30-for-58) from the field while the Crusaders connected on 41 percent (21-for-51) of their attempts. SAU ripped down 37 rebounds compared to Great Lake Christian's 27, and forced the visitors into 31 turnovers. The Cougars turned those giveaways into 34 points while outscoring GLCC 42-10 in the paint.

Hogans and sophomore Thomas Starks chipped in eight points apiece while Starks handed out a team-high seven assists. Freshman Isaiah Ingles registered four assists and three steals to go along with his four points.

Spring Arbor (8-3) returns to the court on Saturday, Dec. 13 when it hosts Trinity Christian College (5-7) at 3 p.m.
