PITTSBURGH – The 14th ranked Spring Arbor University women's soccer team got their season off to a great start posting a 3-0 shutout over Point Park University at Highmark Stadium on Saturday.
Sophomore Corrie Good scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 28th minute when she blasted a shot past the Pioneer goalkeeper from the top of the 18-yard box.
That would be the only goal scored through the first 45 minutes, but the Cougars dominated play out-shooting the home team 8-1.
Spring Arbor added to their lead early in the second half on a goal from junior Shannon Balcer. Senior Becca Lynn sent a free kick from 25 yards out on the left wing towards the back post and found the head of Balcer to give SAU a 2-0 lead in the 54th minute.
The Cougars tallied their third goal in a similar style in the 74th minute. Lynn, this time from the right wing, served another free kick toward the goal and connected with fellow senior Clara Williams, whose header found the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Good finished with a team-high five shots, putting three on goal, while Williams and freshman Aubrey Schierbeek recorded three each. Goalkeepers Sarah Yancer and Ashley Timmons combined for the clean sheet making two and one save, respectively.
SAU outshot Point Park 16-3 on the afternoon and held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Cougar reserve team also earned a victory on the afternoon, defeating the Pioneer reserve squad 2-1. Freshman Katie Hamlin scored the game-winning goal with five seconds left in the match while classmate Renee Broekhuizen also scored.
Up next, the Cougars will welcome Marygrove College for their home opener on Tuesday, Aug. 26 beginning at 7 p.m.
