Men's Soccer Dominant in Win Over Michigan-Dearborn

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Coming off its first loss of the season on Saturday, the Spring Arbor University men's soccer team responded with one of its most complete performances of the year on Wednesday night, defeating the University of Michigan-Dearborn 4-1.

The win improves the Cougars to 7-1 overall while the Wolverines slipped to 0-4 on the season.

Less than three minutes into the contest, junior Anthony Juncaj tallied his first goal of the year to put the Cougars on top 1-0. Freshman Jake Sterling whipped in a dangerous cross that the UMD goalkeeper came out to punch away but the ball found the foot of Juncaj, who ripped a shot into the open net.

Junior Stevenson Storm gave SAU a 2-0 lead with a strike in the 34th minute. Storm collected a loose ball on the end line in the left corner and proceeded to shake two Wolverine defenders on his way to the goal before blasting a shot near-post past the keeper.

The Cougars continued to dominate play in the second half scoring a pair of goals less than 50 seconds apart in the 53rd minute. The first came at the 52:10 mark after freshman Matthew Strangis cleared a ball from the defensive end all the way down the field that Jared Putt outran his defender to get and he would slip a shot under the diving keeper.

Storm would notch his second goal of the match less than a minute later to put the Cougars ahead 4-0. After dribbling around the charging keeper, Storm calmly collected himself and put away the shot for his eighth score of the season.

The Wolverines would get one goal back in the 72nd minute to narrow the deficit, but would not get any closer.

Spring Arbor controlled play throughout the match, allowing the visitors just seven shots, and only one on goal, while recording 22 shots themselves.

The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Sept. 20 when they host Holy Cross College in their final non-conference match before beginning Crossroads League play at Huntington University on Sept. 27.
