Martin Lifts Cougars to Overtime Win at Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.Jacquelyn Martin's first collegiate goal will be a memorable one as the freshman scored the game-winner in the 93rd minute of play to lift the 14th ranked Cougars to a 2-1 victory over Aquinas College on Saturday.

With the win, Spring Arbor University improves to 4-1 on the season, while the Saints fell to 2-1.

The Cougars jumped out in front early when Clara Williams scored in the 16th minute. The senior midfielder took a pass from Martin and put a shot past the Aquinas keeper into the upper left corner to give SAU a 1-0 advantage.

Spring Arbor continued to dominate possession throughout the match, outshooting Aquinas 14-3, but was never able to add on to their lead.

The Cougars' inability to put the home team away proved costly as Aquinas, in one of the only chances it saw on the afternoon, capitalized on an SAU defensive miscue and scored the tying goal in the 86th minute to force overtime.

However, Spring Arbor would quickly bounce back with Aubrey Scheirbeek setting up Martin for the game-winning goal just 2:38 into the extra session.

Up next, the Cougars will travel to Orange Beach, Alabama where they will play a pair of tough contests facing #RV University of Mobile on Friday, Sept. 12 and #9 William Carey University on Saturday, Sept. 13.
