GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Freshman Monika Wynne kept her unbeaten streak alive after rallying to win in three-sets to help lead the Spring Arbor University women's tennis team to a 5-4 victory over Calvin College on Wednesday night.
The win improved the Cougars to 13-5 this season while the Knights dropped to 5-5 overall.
Spring Arbor claimed the early advantage picking up two points in doubles competition. Seniors Hope Roelofs and Katie Storrer held on for a close 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles while sophomore Mary-Kate McShane and Wynne rolled past their opponents 8-1 at No. 3 doubles. Calvin's lone point came at No. 1 doubles where the Knights narrowly edged junior Quincy Banini and senior Erin Hossack 9-7.
The teams went back and forth in singles play. Banini earned a 7-5, 6-2 win at the No. 1 position and Hossack triumphed 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3. The Knights grabbed three points to tie the match, however, with wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles.
The deciding point in the match came down to No. 6 singles where Wynne fought back to capture a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory to stay unblemished and move to 16-0 this season in singles competition.
Up next, the Cougars will visit No. 18 Davenport University on Tuesday, Apr. 14 at 4 p.m.
