No. 2 SAU battles No. 15 Marian to 1-1 draw in regular season finale

INDIANPOLIS – In the final match of the regular season Saturday evening, No. 2 ranked Spring Arbor University battled No. 15 Marian University to a 1-1 draw in a showdown between the Crossroads League's top two teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The host Knights struck first, scoring in the 38th minute. MU's Maria Farmer recovered a deflection and shot it past Cougar goalkeeper Ashley Timmons.
  • Playing from behind for only the second time the season, SAU found the equalizer in the 62nd minute. The Cougars capitalized on a corner kick opportunity as Renee Broekhuizen served a ball into the box and Aubrey Schierbeek scored on a header.
  • Spring Arbor finished with a 22-16 edge in shots while also earning six corner kicks to MU's one.
  • Timmons finished the match with a season-high seven saves.

 
 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • The draw snapped Spring Arbor's 11-match winning streak against Marian dating back to 2009.
  • It was also the first draw for SAU since playing Grace College to a scoreless tie on Oct. 15 last season.
  • For the fifth consecutive season, the Cougars completed the regular season unbeaten in Crossroads League play.

Top-seeded Spring Arbor begins postseason play by hosting eighth-seeded Bethel College (4-12-2, 2-7-0 CL) in the Crossroads League Tournament Quarterfinals on Wednesday, Nov. 1. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
