YPSILANTI, Mich. – All eyes were on the Spring Arbor University men's basketball team Friday morning as the Cougars faced off against Eastern Michigan University on ESPN3 in the first official game of the NCAA Division I basketball season.
Despite being the season opener for Eastern Michigan, the contest was an exhibition game for Spring Arbor, as the Cougars fell to the Eagles 90-62.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Behind six straight points from Zach Medendorp, Spring Arbor jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead over Eastern Michigan.
- The host Eagles answered with an 11-3 run though and would never trail again.
- Spring Arbor out-rebounded Eastern Michigan 38-37, but the Eagles had a considerable edge in the turnover department, forcing SAU into 24 giveaways while committing just eight.
- Eastern Michigan outscored Spring Arbor 46-8 in the paint and 39-4 off turnovers.
FOR THE COUGARS
- Freshman Brandon Durnell had 20 points to pace the Cougars. Durnell was 5-for-7 from three-point range and 5-for-6 from the free throw line.
- Medendorp recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds while also blocking two shots.
- Jameson Pavelka had nine points going a perfect 3-for-3 from long range while Paul Marandet chipped in seven points and Ben Geschke added five. Tommy Hamilton dished out a team-high five assists.
- Spring Arbor shot 36 percent (19-for-53) from the field, including 11-for-26 from behind the arc.
FOR THE EAGLES
- Four Eastern Michigan players landed in double figures. Elijah Minnie finished with 22 points to lead the way. James Thompson IV posted a double-double with 10 points and 14 boards.
- The home team shot 50 percent (33-for-66) on the afternoon.

Spring Arbor will visit Lawrence Tech (1-2) in a non-conference tilt on Saturday, Nov. 11. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
