WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University men's basketball team found itself in a dogfight when it visited Grace College on Saturday afternoon.
The Lancers, who were seeking their first Crossroads League victory of the season, took the No. 13 ranked Cougars to overtime, but six straight points from Paul Marandet to start the extra period helped propel SAU to an 87-82 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Spring Arbor started off red-hot, making four consecutive three-pointers to open the game, including three from Drew Zuidema.
- The Cougars, behind 15 points from Zach Medendorp, led throughout the first half – by as many as 15 at one point – and took a 41-33 advantage into halftime.
- Trailing by double digits midway through the second half, Grace began to slowly claw its way back. The Lancers held the Cougars to just two field goals over the final seven minutes of the contest, and a pair of free throws with 3:10 remaining gave the home team its first lead of the game, 66-64.
- Trailing by two in the final minute, the SAU defensive came up with a huge stop, forcing Grace into a turnover. Jeff Beckman would deliver to clutch free throws on the next possession to send the teams to overtime.
- Marandet took over in overtime, scoring six consecutive points to start the period. Grace trimmed the deficit to two, 82-80, with 1:25 on the clock, but Zuidema answered with a dagger three to help seal the victory.
FOR THE COUGARS
- Medendorp finished with a game-high 23 points and blocked four shots. Marandet added 21 points, including eight in overtime, while also dishing out eight assists.
- Three other Cougars also scored in double figures. Zuidema had 16 points knocking down five triples. Brandon Durnell turned in a 13 point performance off the bench. Beckman had 11 points and 13 rebounds to register his fourth double-double of the season.
- Spring Arbor connected on 53 percent (32-for-61) of its field goal attempts, including a 9-for-22 mark from the three-point line.
FOR THE LANCERS
- Grace also had five players reach double figures in scoring. Jaret Sons led the way with 16 points and Logan Godfrey had 15.
- The Lancers shot 46 percent (26-for-56) from the floor and were 22-for-24 from the free throw stripe.
- Grace out-rebounded SAU 35-30. The Lancers had eight offensive boards and converted those into 15 second-chance points.

Spring Arbor takes on a pair of Top 10 ranked teams over its next two games. The Cougars visit No. 2 University of Saint Francis (17-3, 7-1 CL) on Tuesday, Jan. 16 before hosting No. 7 Indiana Wesleyan University (15-5, 6-2 CL) on Saturday, Jan. 20.
