Cougars' defense shuts down Michigan-Dearborn

DEARBORN, Mich. – The No. 9 ranked Spring Arbor University men's basketball team shut down the University of Michigan-Dearborn 72-59 on Wednesday night. The Cougars held the Wolverines to season-lows in points and field goal percentage on the way to their fourth straight victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Michigan-Dearborn held a 12-7 lead at the 14:36 mark of the first half, but the Spring Arbor defense would hold the Wolverines to just one field goal over the next eight minutes.
  • The Cougars capitalized while the home team struggled to put points on the board, using a 15-2 run during that eight minute span to build a lead it would never surrender.
  • Spring Arbor led by 16, 36-20, at halftime and pushed the lead to as many as 25 in the second half.

 
 

FOR THE COUGARS

  • Tom Hamilton was Spring Arbor's leading scorer with 14 points going 5-for-6 from the field, including a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range. He also dished out a game-high six assists.
  • Brandon Durnell finished with 11 points while Jeff Beckman and Nick Welch nearly posted double-doubles. Beckman had nine points and 10 rebounds and Welch had 10 points and nine boards. Paul Marandet and Payton DeWildt ended the night with seven points apiece.
  • Spring Arbor shot 55 percent (28-for-51) from the field, including 10-for-17 from long range. The Cougars made just a handful of trips to the free throw line, going 6-for-7 from the charity stripe.
  • SAU dominated the glass, out-rebounding Michigan-Dearborn 37-25.

 
 

FOR THE WOLVERINES

  • Xavier Crofford scored 13 points to lead Michigan-Dearborn.
  • The Wolverines shot a season-worst 29 percent (18-for-62) and were just 6-for-21 from three-point range.
