HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Marian pounced on Spring Arbor early, racing out to an 11-2 advantage just over four minutes into the contest. The Knights, who shot over 60 percent from the floor in the first half, would expand their lead to as many as 16 and take a 48-34 lead into halftime.
  • Trailing by 13, 64-51, midway through the second half, the Cougars would make a run to cut the deficit to five. Drew Zuidema got things going with a deep three-pointer. Brandon Durnell would also bury a shot from long range before a jumper from Tommy Hamilton made it 66-61 with 8:46 to go.
  • The Knights turned to junior guard Wes Stowers, the league's leading scorer, and he would drop six quick points to boost MU's lead back to double digits.
  • The Cougars had one more run in them. With Marian leading 79-66, SAU scored nine straight points with three's from Hamilton, Zuidema and Paul Marandet to get within four, 79-75, at the 3:02 mark. However, the Knights would buckle down on defense and hold the home team scoreless from the field over the final three minutes to hang on for the victory.
