Softball scores 26 runs in doubleheader sweep of Grace

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University softball team had an offensive explosion at the plate on the way to a doubleheader sweep of Grace College Saturday. The Cougars posted an 8-3 victory in game one before erupting for an 18-6 win in game two – the most runs scored by SAU in a single game since posting 19 during the 2010 season.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • The score was tied 1-1 after the first inning, but Spring Arbor would tally at least one run in each of the next four to take a commanding lead.
  • The Cougars scored three times in the second on RBI hits by Kyla Semones and Hope Longenbarger. Then, in the third, Sydney Taylor crushed a solo home run to put SAU up 5-1. Taylor drove in two more an inning later with a two-out double to left. A sacrifice fly by Semones in the fifth capped the scoring for the Cougars.
  • Taylor went 2-for-4 with four RBI's while Longenbarger and Jade Nowe also collected two hits each.
  • Kelsey Brown pitched all seven innings allowing just two earned runs, scattering nine hits and striking out two batters.

 
 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Grace raced out to a 4-1 lead after the first two innings. However, Spring Arbor responded with a four-run third to take the lead.
  • The Cougars and Lancers were tied 6-6 heading into sixth inning, but SAU would tally 12 unanswered runs over the final two frames to secure the season sweep of Grace.
  • Spring Arbor pounded out 20 hits in the contest. Taylor had four in five trips to the plate while Nowe picked up three along with four RBI's.
  • Lauren Heath went the distance pitching all seven innings. She gave up four earned runs and had two strikeouts.

 
 

UP NEXT

The Cougars visit the University of Saint Francis (17-20, 10-14 CL) on Tuesday, Apr. 24 before returning home to host Mount Vernon Nazarene University (21-13-1, 13-9-1 CL) on Wednesday, Apr. 25 in their final home game of the regular season.
