Men's Soccer dominates Cornerstone in shutout victory

Box Score

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men's soccer bounced back from its loss at Olivet Nazarene University earlier this week with a dominant 2-0 victory over Cornerstone University on Saturday at the Cougar Soccer Complex.

THE BASICS

FINAL SCORE: Spring Arbor 2, Cornerstone 0

LOCATION: Cougar Soccer Complex | Spring Arbor, Mich.

RECORDS: Spring Arbor 3-2-0, Cornerstone 1-3-0

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Spring Arbor put the pressure on Cornerstone immediately with a dangerous, in-close chance from Jacob Crull that was saved by the CU goalkeeper. The Cougars would tally five shots in the first 15 minutes, but were unable to find the back of the net.
  • SAU got on the scoreboard in the 20th minute on an own goal by Cornerstone. Crull delivered a cross into the goal box and the pass was redirected into the goal by a Golden Eagle defender.
  • Cornerstone created a scoring opportunity moments into the second half, but goalkeeper Zach Weidman made a great diving stop to preserve the lead.
  • In the 62nd minute, Tyler Green netted the first goal of his career to put the Cougars up 2-0 and help clinch the victory.
  • Weidman finished the match with two saves to earn the clean sheet.
  • Spring Arbor outshot Cornerstone 18-7.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Spring Arbor has won five straight matches against Cornerstone dating back to 2014. All five victories have been by shutout.
  • Weidman became the third goalkeeper to earn a win between the pipes for the Cougars this season.
  • The Cougars have scored 11 goals in five matches so far this season, which ranks as the second-most in the Crossroads League.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH NATHAN MILLER

  • "I thought it was a really positive and dominating performance. We attacked the game from the start and played through their lines really, really well."
  • "We can still finish much better and show how dynamic we are, but I know that's going to come - the guys are working so hard at it."
  • "We've started a bit slow this year, but we are going to improve every single week. Exciting soccer tonight and we will keep it going."
