Cougars win fifth straight, blank IWU 2-0

MARION, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University men's soccer team kept rolling on Wednesday, picking up its fifth consecutive victory after defeating Crossroads League rival Indiana Wesleyan University 2-0.

The 12th ranked Cougars improved to 8-1-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in league play while the Wildcats suffered their fifth straight setback falling to 2-6-3 and 0-3 in the conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Two goals in an eight minute span was all Spring Arbor needed to knock off Indiana Wesleyan. Alex Sokalski netted his first goal of the season with an assist from Aidan Taylor in the 21st minute. Moments later, Cole Russell registered his 12th goal of the campaign, scoring on a breakaway.
  • Indiana Wesleyan finished the match with a 21-12 shot advantage, but SAU goalkeeper Christopher Banfi, the reigning Crossroads League Defensive Player of the Week, made eight saves to preserve the shutout.

 
 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The win was the fourth straight for Spring Arbor over Indiana Wesleyan dating back to the 2016 season.
  • Spring Arbor's seven shutouts this season are tied for the most in the NAIA. The Cougars have not allowed a goal in 490 minutes of action.
  • Russell tallied his 12th goal of the season, which is tied for the most in the Crossroads League. The junior forward has scored in four straight matches and in 10 of the team's 12 matches this season.
