Cougars defeat Taylor to advance to CL Tournament Semifinals

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The top-seeded, and No. 7 ranked, Spring Arbor University men's soccer team defeated eighth-seeded Taylor University 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in the Crossroads League Tournament Quarterfinals.

Zoltan Suranyi and Brian D'Ascenzo provided the goals to send the Cougars to the tournament semifinals for the ninth consecutive season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Suranyi, a transfer from Taylor, broke the scoreless deadlock with his strike in the 52nd minute, and his tally would prove to be enough to put his former club away.
  • The Cougars padded their lead 15 minutes later when D'Ascenzo banged home a cross from Jacob Crull.
  • Spring Arbor finished the afternoon with a 13-3 shot advantage over Taylor and earned seven corner kicks compared to the Trojans' two.
  • Goalkeeper Christopher Banfi stopped the only shot he faced to record his 11th shutout of the campaign.

 
 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Spring Arbor has won eight straight matches against Taylor.
  • The shutout was the 12th of the season, which is tied for the most in the NAIA.
  • After missing most of the season due to injury, Suranyi has been on fire since his return, scoring for the third consecutive match, including two game-winners.
