Men's Basketball sweeps Florida trip with win over No. 11 Ave Maria

AVE MARIA, Fla. – The Spring Arbor University men's basketball team took care of business in The Sunshine State, picking up a pair of victories during its Florida trip. The No. 15 ranked Cougars started things off with a 71-59 win over William Jessup on Wednesday before knocking off No. 11 Ave Maria 80-74 on Friday evening.

Paul Marandet led with the way with 18 points against William Jessup while Luke Barber and Payton DeWildt followed with 16 and 14, respectively.

Spring Arbor trailed Ave Maria at halftime, but Marandet rallied the team in the second half, scoring 20 of his 29 points over the final 20 minutes. Barber finished with 17 while DeWildt had 14 and Jeff Beckman added 13.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The score was tied 6-6 at the 12:34 mark of the first half, but an 11-0 SAU run, highlighted by five points from Denver Cade, gave the Cougars a lead that they would never surrender.
  • Spring Arbor held an 11 point lead at halftime before quickly ballooning the margin to 20 in the second half.
  • Marandet poured in a game-high 18 points on 6-for-8 shooting and 6-for-8 from the free throw line. Barber finished with 16 and sank four 3-pointers while DeWildt posted 14 points.
  • The Cougars shot 68 percent (15-for-22) from the field in the second half and 52 percent (26-for-50) for the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Playing for the second time in three days, Spring Arbor took on Ave Maria on Friday night in a battle between two top-15 ranked teams.
  • Ave Maria led by as many as 11 in the first half, but Spring Arbor fought its way back and, over the last five minutes of the period, closed the gap to four, 35-31, heading into halftime.
  • The second half was back-and-forth with the lead changing hands seven times.
  • A pair of free throws from Beckman with 3:28 remaining put SAU in front by one, 69-68, and DeWildt followed with a clutch 3-pointer to boost the lead to four with 2:40 to play.
  • The Gyrenes got within one, 75-74, with 10 seconds left, but Marandet would put the game away at the free throw line going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe down the stretch.
  • Marandet scored 20 of his 29 points in the second half. He was 10-for-15 from the field and a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line. The senior floor general also dished out 12 assists.
  • Three other Cougars finished in double figures. Barber tallied 17 points while DeWildt just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Beckman chipped in 13 points.
  • Spring Arbor shot 58 percent (30-for-52) on the night and Ave Maria finished at 45 percent (29-for-64). The Cougars also outrebounded the Gyrenes 38-25.
