Semones grand slam highlights DH sweep over Pilots

MISHAWAKA, Ind. – Senior Kyla Semones' grand slam highlighted a 10-run fourth inning as the Spring Arbor University softball team rolled past Bethel College 10-1 in game two of Tuesday's Crossroads League doubleheader. The Cougars also came away with a 5-1 victory earlier in the afternoon.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • A two-run single by Brookelyn Stafford in the second inning put Spring Arbor on the scoreboard.
  • The Cougars doubled their lead an inning later when Jade Nowe drove in a pair with a base hit.
  • That was more than enough run support for starting pitcher Lauren Wirgau, who limited Bethel to just one run over seven innings. She gave up just four hits while striking out 10 batters – just one off her career-high of 11, which also came against the Pilots a season ago.
  • Stafford was 3-for-3 in the game with two RBI's. Cora Millay and Semones picked up two hits apiece.

 
 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Bethel led 1-0 after three innings of play, but Spring Arbor put up a 10-spot in the fourth to take control.
  • Semones ignited the 10-run outburst with a run-scoring double. Abbey Burdgick and Millay also added run-scoring doubles in the inning. Later in the inning, Semones made her second trip to the plate, this time with the bases loaded, and smashed a 2-1 offering from Brooke Stoltz over the right field fence for her first career grand slam.
  • Semones finished the game going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a career-high five RBI's. Burdgick and Chloe Gignac also collected two hits.
  • Melody Donovan earned the win in the circle. Donovan pitched all five innings giving up one run on six hits and struck out two.
