Softball falls to No. 13 Indiana Wesleyan in extra innings

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University softball team took No. 13 ranked Indiana Wesleyan University to extra innings in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, but the Wildcats managed to escape with a 6-3 win.

Indiana Wesleyan also prevailed in game two 13-2.

It was also Senior Day for the Cougars, who celebrated the careers of Hannah Sutton, Amber Beal, Kyla Semones and Sydney Taylor.

Spring Arbor finished the regular season in eighth place in the Crossroads League standings. The Cougars will begin play in the Crossroads League Tournament on Wednesday, May 1.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Three seniors helped put Spring Arbor on the board in the second inning. Taylor opened the frame with a double to right field. Beal advanced her to third base on a groundout and Sutton drove her in with a single up the middle.
  • Indiana Wesleyan pulled ahead with solo home runs in the third and fourth innings, but SAU regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth following a two-out, two-RBI single by Cora Millay.
  • The Wildcats fought back to tie the score with a run in the fifth, and the score would remain tied until IWU pushed three runs across in the eighth.
  •  Taylor went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored while Sutton recorded two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
  • Starting pitcher Lauren Wirgau held one of the league's best offenses in check for seven innings. She finished the game allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out five batters.

 
 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Indiana Wesleyan did all of its damage in one inning, scoring 13 runs in the third.
  • Chloe Gignac recorded SAU's only hit with an RBI double in the fourth inning.

 
 

UP NEXT

The Crossroads League Tournament is set to begin on Wednesday, May 1 and run through Friday, May 3.
