Softball picks up win over Point Park in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Spring Arbor University softball team opened Monday with a 7-4 victory over Point Park University. Abbey Lafler had two RBI's while Hannah Laurin tossed three scoreless innings.

In the second game of the day, the Cougars jumped on top of unbeaten Ave Maria, leading 5-0 after four innings, but the Gyrenes fought their way back to defeat SAU 8-5.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spring Arbor plated two runs in the bottom of the second inning. After leading off the inning with a single, Laurin came around to score on an RBI groundout by Sarah Matlock. Two batters later, Abbey Burdgick delivered a two-out hit to bring home Jade Nowe.
  • The Cougars broke the game open with four runs in the third inning. With two runs already in, Lafler capped the scoring with a clutch two-RBI single driving in Gabby Nafziger and Nowe.
  • Point Park battled its way back and got within three, 6-3.
  • In the seventh, an RBI single by Marisa Morgan added a key insurance run. The Pioneers threatened in the home half of the inning, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Morgan worked her way out of the jam.
  • Five Cougars recorded multi-hit games, including Nowe who also scored twice.
  • Laurin started the game in the circle and pitched the first three innings allowing no runs, no hits and struck out one batter.
 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spring Arbor carried the momentum over from the first game, scoring four runs in the first two innings to take an early lead. Emmalee Hamp put SAU on the board with an RBI single in the first inning before also delivering a two-RBI hit to highlight a three-run second inning.
  • In addition to her work at the plate, Hamp was outstanding in the circle. The freshman pitcher tossed four near-perfect innings against the high-powered Ave Maria offense, which entered the contest averaging 11 runs per game.
  • After being kept off the scoreboard through the first four innings, Ave Maria erupted for six runs in the fifth. The Gyrenes would add two more in the sixth to grab an 8-5 advantage.
  • Spring Arbor threatened in the seventh putting runners at second and third, but were unable to score.
  • Abbie Funk collected three hits while four Cougars had two, including Hamp who also recorded three RBIs. Cora Millay went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored.
 

UP NEXT
Spring Arbor returns to action on Wednesday, Mar. 3. The Cougars will play the University of Northwestern Ohio at 9 a.m. and Point Park at 1:30 p.m.
