Marian pulls away in second half to top SAU

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Just three days after facing No. 3 Grace College, Spring Arbor University took the floor against another top-10 ranked opponent on Tuesday evening in the McDonald Athletic Center – this time against No. 6 Marian University.
 
The Cougars trailed by only six, 34-28, at halftime, but the Knights pulled away in the second half, outscoring SAU 48-31 over the final 20 minutes, to remain unbeaten on the season.
 
Freshman Gabe Newhof recorded his second double-double of the season with 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Cougars.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spring Arbor held one of the nation's top scoring teams in check in the first half, limiting Marian to just 34 first half points. The Cougars trailed by just three after an Eli White free throw with four seconds left in the period, but a 3-pointer by MU's Taeshon Cherry at the buzzer gave the visitors a 34-28 advantage at the intermission.
  • Marian led 47-38 at the 14:40 mark of the second half before taking control of the game with a 15-3 run over the next five minutes.
  • Newhof finished with 23 points – his third 20-point performance of the season – while also grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds.
  • Austin Braun had 10 points, seven boards and five assists while White and Kevyn Robertson added nine points apiece.
  • Marian was paced by Cherry, who had 19 points. The Knights had three other players finish in double-digits, including Hayden Langkabel with 15 points.
 
 
UP NEXT
The Cougars will face a third straight ranked opponent on Wednesday, Nov. 30 when they travel to Marion, Indiana to take on No. 14 Indiana Wesleyan University.
