No. 8 Marian escapes upset-minded Cougars

INDIANAPOLIS – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team gave No. 8 ranked Marian University all it could handle Tuesday night, but the Knights were able to survive and deal the Cougars their second straight setback, 71-64.
 
Alana Nelson had 17 points and seven rebounds while Alex Long added 14 points and five boards.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spring Arbor got off to a slow start, falling behind 19-7 after the first quarter.
  • The Cougars battled back, however, outscoring Marian in, both, the second and third quarters, and trailed by only five, 49-44, entering the final period.
  • Marian led by nine, 59-50, midway through the fourth, a 10-2 run – capped by a jumper by Long – got the Cougars within one, 61-60, with less than two minutes to play.
  • In the final minute, MU's Majestic Sales hit a baseline jumper with the shot clock winding down to boost the home team's lead to three. The Knights would clinch the game at the free throw line, going 6-for-6 from the stripe down the stretch.
  • Nelson registered 17 points and seven rebounds to pace Spring Arbor. Long followed with 14 points and five rebounds. Alize Tripp and Emma Smieska chipped in seven points apiece while Tripp dished out five assists.
  • Marian's Ella Collier posted a game-high 23 points while Aliyah Evans added 18.
