Baseball splits, secures series over Grace

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Spring Arbor University and Grace College split a doubleheader Monday with the Cougars winning game one 19-11 and the Lancers taking game two 8-5.
 
Spring Arbor won the series, however, after taking both ends of the doubleheader on Thursday.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Spring Arbor offense exploded for 19 runs – matching the most runs scored in a game this season.
  • The Cougars scored eight times in the first inning to take an early lead, but Grace answered with one in the first and six in the second to cut the deficit to one, 8-7.
  • Spring Arbor was clinging to an 11-10 advantage through five innings before plating eight runs in the sixth to break the game open.
  • Landon Raczkowski was 3-for-4 with two home runs, three runs scored and four RBI's. Ben Redfield also collected three hits while crossing the plate four times. Bryce Richey had two hits, including a homer, and drove in three.
  • Cade Kontny picked up the win on the mound surrendering three earned runs over 4.1 innings of work. Jacob Pavey worked 3.0 innings of relief allowing one run on two hits.
 
 
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spring Arbor got the bats going early again in game two, scoring three times in the top of the first inning.
  • Grace responded, however, with four in the home half of the first to take the lead and the Lancers would not give it up.
  • The Cougars made it a one-run game, 5-4, following an RBI single by Brandon Haynes in the fifth inning, but Grace pushed three runs across in the bottom of the fifth to take control.
  • Haynes, Richey and Jake Spedoske finished with two hits apiece while Haynes drove in four runs.
 
 
UP NEXT
Spring Arbor visits Siena Heights University on Tuesday, Mar. 15. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
