Softball splits at Huntington

HUNTINGTON, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University softball team earned its first Crossroads League victory of the season after splitting a doubleheader at Huntington University on Thursday.
 
The Cougars dropped game one 6-1, but bounced back with a 4-1 win in game two.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • A five-run third inning was all Huntington needed to take game one of Thursday's doubleheader.
  • Spring Arbor's lone run of the contest came from an RBI single by Jade Nowe in the sixth that allowed Allie Funk to cross the plate.
  • Nowe finished 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.
  • MacKenzie Collins pitched 2.2 innings allowing five runs on eight hits. Elena Jones pitched 3.1 innings of relief surrendering one run on three hits.
 
 
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Already leading 1-0, Spring Arbor doubled its lead with an RBI double by Maddy Thrush in the fourth inning.
  • Abbey Lafler drove in Sarah Matlock with a base hit in the sixth to give the Cougars a 3-1 lead, and Emmalee Hamp blasted a solo home run in the seventh.
  • Three Cougars finished with multiple hits, including Lafler, Maddie Gillett and Chloe Gignac.
  • Hamp pitched all seven innings allowing only one run on five hits while striking out six batters.
