Baseball splits league opener at Huntington

HUNTINGTON, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University baseball team opened Crossroads League play at Huntington University on Friday. The Cougars secured game one, 6-4, but fell to the Foresters 2-1 in game two.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
  • Huntington scored three runs in the first two innings to grab an early lead, but Spring Arbor responded with a run in the second, two in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead.
  • The Cougars added a key insurance run in the eighth on an RBI double by Connor Dee.
  • The Foresters got one run back in the ninth, but Jack Will slammed the door shut.
  • Zach Adams was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Braydon Gregory finished with three RBI's.
  • Kyler Hinken earned the win on the mound. After giving up the early runs, Hinken settled in and worked five scoreless innings and finished with 11 strikeouts.
 
 
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spring Arbor led 1-0 through five innings, but Huntington was able to push two runs across in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead.
  • The Cougars put the tying run in scoring position in the seventh inning, but the Foresters escaped the jam to split the series-opening doubleheader.
  • SAU finished with five hits, including three doubles by Aiden Brunin, Brennan Moran and Gregory. Bryce Richey scored SAU's only run.
  • Josh Murphy pitched all six innings allowing two runs on three hits while striking out five batters.
 
 
UP NEXT
Spring Arbor hosts Huntington in its home opener on Saturday, Mar. 2. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
