Softball splits home opener with Bethel

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University softball team split its home-opening doubleheader with Bethel University on Friday. The Cougars won game one 9-4 before dropping game two 2-1.
 
The Cougars move to 10-7 overall and 2-2 in the Crossroads League.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spring Arbor scored in each of the first four innings, including three runs in the second, to build a 6-0 lead.
  • Bethel was finally able to breakthrough in the fifth, pushing four runs across to cut the deficit to two, 6-4.
  • The Cougars answered in the home half of the fifth with three runs of their own – highlighted by a two-RBI single by Grace Lentz.
  • Lentz was 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs. Emmalee Hamp went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI while Elaina Walker collected two hits, scored twice and drove in one.
  • Hamp pitched a complete game giving up four runs on six hits while striking out seven.
 
 
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spring Arbor got an outstanding outing from senior pitcher Elena Jones, who worked all seven innings and allowed only two runs and scattered six hits, but the was unable to get the bats going.
  • Both teams scratched a run across in the first inning, and that was how the score stayed until the sixth when the Pilots took the lead on a sacrifice fly.
  • The Cougars put the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh with only one out but was unable to do any damage.
  • Three Cougars had two hits, including Walker, Jones and Maddy Thrush.
 
 
UP NEXT
Spring Arbor is right back in action on Saturday, Mar. 16 against Grace College starting at 1 p.m. from the Cougar Softball Field.
