Softball wins two on Senior Day, clinches No. 3 seed for CL Tournament

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University softball team celebrated Senior Day with a pair of wins over Goshen College on Saturday at the Cougar Softball Field. The Cougars defeated the Maple Leafs 9-7 in the opener before cruising to an 11-1 victory in game two.
 
Prior to the game, head coach Deb Thompson and the Cougars recognized their three seniors – Emmalee Hamp, Elena Jones and Maddy Thrush.
 
Spring Arbor finished the regular season with an overall record of 31-18 and a mark of 23-13 in Crossroads League play to finish third in the conference standings – its best finish since 2009 when it also finished third.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spring Arbor took control early, grabbing a 7-0 lead through three innings.
  • The Cougars led 8-1 after five, but Goshen rallied for six runs in the sixth to close the gap to one, 8-7.
  • SAU added an insurance run in the home half of the sixth when Taylor Clark scored on a sacrifice fly by Brooke Meeker.
  • The Maple Leafs threatened in the seventh, putting runners on first and second with no outs, but Summer Ambler was able to work her way out of the jam and nail down the win.
  • Meeker finished with three RBIs and a run scored. Grace Lentz was 2-for-4 with a run scored while Payton Grange and Tiffany Keller drove in two runs each.
  • Elena Jones earned her 10th win of the year in the circle while Ambler picked up her second save.
 
 
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spring Arbor jumped out in front quickly again in game two with three runs in the second inning.
  • The Cougars put the game out of reach with eight runs in the third.
  • Four Cougars had a multi-hit game, including Emmalee Hamp, who went 2-for-3 with five RBIs. Maddy Thrush was also 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
  • Hamp allowed one run on four hits over five innings en route to earning her 19th win of the season.
 
 
UP NEXT
The Crossroads League Tournament, which will be hosted at SAU, is set to begin on Tuesday, Apr. 30. The tournament will begin with two play-in games on Tuesday. The No. 5 seed Huntington University will play No. 8 seed Goshen, and No. 6 seed Taylor University will play No. 7 seed University of Saint Francis. The winners of each game will advance to join a six-team double elimination bracket starting on Wednesday, May 1.
 
Spring Arbor, the No. 3 seed, will play its first game on Wednesday, May 1 at 12 p.m.
