Softball season ends in national tournament, falls to Southeastern in Opening Round

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The Spring Arbor University softball team saw its season come to an end Wednesday in the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round as the Cougars fell to No. 25 Southeastern University 4-0.
 
Spring Arbor finished the season with an overall record of 34-22 – the most wins since posting 43 in the 2005 campaign – and made the national tournament for the first time since 1986.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Southeastern threatened in the first inning with a runner on second and only one out, but Spring Arbor escaped the jam following an incredible diving catch by center fielder Matajia Cerroni, who then doubled off the runner at second base.
  • The Cougars created a chance of their own in the second inning after Elaina Walker and Brooke Meeker reached base to start the frame. However, the Fire were also able to end the threat with no damage done.
  • Southeastern pushed the first run of the game across in the home half of the second when a batter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
  • The Fire added to their lead in the fourth, scoring three runs with two outs.
  • The Spring Arbor offense was held in check by SEU's Claire Sekinger, who allowed only four hits on the afternoon.
  • Emmalee Hamp pitched all six innings and gave up three earned runs on seven hits.
