Baseball splits doubleheader with Goshen to begin CL play

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - Following its doubleheader sweep of Lourdes on Tuesday, the Spring Arbor University baseball team looked to bring that momentum into Crossroads League play on a windy Friday afternoon against Goshen College. The Cougars came out hot in game one, riding a six-run third inning to a 9-4 win. However, the offense went silent in game two, and a four-run first inning for the Maple Leafs gave them a lead they wouldn't relinquish, as Goshen took game two, 6-2.

SCORES:

RECORDS:
Spring Arbor 7-5 (1-1 CL), Goshen 2-6 (1-1 CL)

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The first inning was scoreless for both squads, before Goshen drew first blood in the second inning on a double and RBI single. Spring Arbor would respond right back in the bottom of the second, as Connor Dee singled, Conner Barkel was hit by a pitch, and Joey Tessmer singled up the middle to drive Dee in and tie the score at 1.
  • Goshen was held scoreless in the top of the third, and it looked like Spring Arbor would have the same result in the bottom of the inning after two quick outs. The Cougars had other plans however, as Braydon Gregory singled to left, Cade Heckendorn reached on an error, advancing to second and moving Gregory to third on the play, leading to a Dee home run to left, the first of the year for Spring Arbor, and giving them a 4-1 lead. The Cougars continued to pass the baton after the home run, as Barkel singled up the middle for his first collegiate hit, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Jake Spedoske RBI single. Tessmer reached on an error on the next play, and swiped second, allowing Spedoske to score on the throw, and Aiden Brunin followed that up with a bloop single to right, scoring Tessmer and giving Spring Arbor a 7-1 lead.
  • Goshen wouldn't go down without a fight, as the Maple Leafs found some offense of their own in the top of the fourth, drawing a walk and hitting a home run of their own to cut their deficit to 7-3. Spring Arbor would get that run back in the bottom the frame, as Gregory walked, Heckendorn singled, advancing Gregory to third, where he would score on a sacrifice fly from Dee.
  • The Maple Leafs would scratch across another run in the top of the fifth, drawing two walks to begin the frame, and scoring via an errant throw on a double play attempt to draw closer once again, 8-4.
  • The teams would go scoreless for the next 3.5 innings, before Spring Arbor would add an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th, as Cade Heckendorn laid down a safety squeeze bunt that scored pinch runner Brenden Phillips, extending the Cougar lead to 9-4, which would be the final score as Josh Murphy threw a 1-2-3 ninth to seal the win.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Game 2 began with 2 quick outs for the Cougars before Goshen found some offense, stringing together a single, a walk, and two RBI doubles to take a 3-0 lead. The Cougars went down in order in the bottom of the first frame, before Goshen continued to swing it well, scoring on an RBI single, a bases loaded walk, and an RBI fielder's choice to double their lead to 6-0.
  • The Cougar offense was held in check until the bottom of the fourth, where Connor Dee doubled, advanced to third on a Jake Zeeb groundout, and scored on a wild pitch to cut into the Goshen lead, 6-1.
  • Both teams would go scoreless until the bottom of the 7th, when Joey Tessmer homered with two outs, but it was unfortunately too late, as the Cougars fell, 6-2.
  • Despite a rocky start by Ryan Ruhlman, the Cougar pitching out of the pen was fantastic, as Josh Murphy threw 3.2 scoreless, hitless innings with five strikeouts, and Braylon Essian threw 2 scoreless innings with three punchouts of his own.
