Cougars Use Late Rally to Beat Saint Francis

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University softball team split a doubleheader with University of Saint Francis at home on Saturday, rallying for a 5-4 victory in the opener before falling 7-0 in game two.

The Cougars now stand at 10-8 overall and 1-3 in Crossroads League play.

Game One | SAU 5, Saint Francis 4

Saint Francis took advantage of a Spring Arbor error to score three runs in the opening inning. However, SAU pitcher Emilee Underwood settled in and limited the visitors to just one additional run over the final six innings, giving the offense a chance to rally.

Spring Arbor was held scoreless through the first four frames before breaking through with three runs in the fifth inning to cut into the deficit.

The Cougars completed the comeback in the sixth when Grace Luby and Nicole Barbeau each delivered RBI hits to put SAU in front 5-4.

Luby and Barbeau each finished with two hits to lead the offense.

Underwood earned the win in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing just one earned run over seven innings and striking out four.

Game Two | Saint Francis 7, SAU 0

Saint Francis led throughout the second game, building a 3-0 lead through six innings before putting the contest away with a four-run seventh.

USF pitcher Ellie Sauder kept the Cougar offense quiet, holding Spring Arbor to four hits in the shutout.

Anna Kemp led SAU with two hits while Taylor Clark and Kennadi Killeen each recorded a hit.

Spring Arbor will return to action Wednesday, Mar. 18 when it travels to Marion, Indiana to take on Indiana Wesleyan University.
