SIOUX CITY, Iowa – No. 6-seed Spring Arbor University saw its season come to a close on Friday evening with a 75-65 loss to No. 2-seed Campbellsville University in the NAIA Women's Basketball National Championship Round of 16 at Tyson Events Center.
In a tightly contested battle throughout, the Cougars held a 59-57 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Ashley Weller quickly extended the advantage with an old-fashioned three-point play to open the final period, giving SAU a five-point cushion.
However, the Cougars' offense went cold down the stretch. Spring Arbor managed just one field goal for the remainder of the game, allowing Campbellsville to rally and take control. Despite the scoring drought, SAU remained within striking distance into the final minutes before the Tigers sealed the win at the free throw line.
Weller led the Cougars with 17 points, while
Megan Zeitz added 11.
Emma Smieska and
Aubrey Crockett each chipped in eight points in the effort.
Under head coach
John Williams, Spring Arbor concludes the season with a 24-8 overall record. The 24 wins are tied for the most during Williams' four-year tenure and match the program's highest single-season total since the 1998-99 campaign.
