SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University baseball team picked up a pair of Crossroads League victories over Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday at Hank Burbridge Field, winning 4-3 in game one and 6-4 in game two.
With the wins, the Cougars improve to 15-12 overall and 10-8 in conference play.
In the opener, Spring Arbor erased an early 2-0 deficit with a three-run third inning to take control.
Joey Tessmer drove in
Nate Dutkowski to get SAU on the board, and later in the inning
Brenden Phillips delivered a two-out hit to plate both Tessmer and
Aiden Brunin.
The Cougars added what proved to be the deciding run in the fourth on a double steal, with
Connor Christman crossing the plate.
Lucas Dawson was dominant out of the bullpen, tossing four straight scoreless innings to help SAU maintain its lead. Mount Vernon Nazarene threatened in the eighth, cutting the deficit to one after a solo home run, and putting two more runners on, but Dawson worked out of the jam.
Jack Will closed the door with a perfect ninth to secure the save. Phillips led the offense, going 2-for-4.
In game two,
Connor Dee gave SAU an early lead with an RBI single in the first, but Mount Vernon Nazarene answered with four runs across the second and third innings to take a 4-1 advantage.
Spring Arbor chipped away with a run in the third on a sacrifice fly from Brunin before breaking through in the fifth. The Cougars scored four runs in the inning to reclaim the lead, highlighted by a clutch two-RBI double down the right field line from Phillips.
Kyler Hinken earned the win, allowing four runs, but only three earned, on six hits while striking out five. He was followed by Will, who picked up his second save of the day with a scoreless seventh, striking out two.
Connor Reed paced the offense in the nightcap, going 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored, while
Zach Adams added two hits. Dee and Phillips each drove in two runs.
Spring Arbor and Mount Vernon Nazarene will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Monday, March 30, beginning at 1 p.m.
