MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Spring Arbor University softball team delivered a dominant performance Thursday at The Space Coast Spring Games in Florida, earning a pair of run-rule victories. The Cougars defeated Hannibal-LaGrange University 10-0 in five innings before topping Judson University 10-0 in five innings to improve to 9-3 on the season.
Game One | SAU 10, Hannibal-LaGrange 0 (5 Innings)
Spring Arbor wasted no time getting on the board as
Taylor Clark launched a leadoff home run to give the Cougars an early 1-0 advantage.
Still leading by one in the third inning, SAU extended the lead with three runs behind RBI hits from
Summer Ambler,
Brooke Meeker, and
Grace Luby. The Cougars continued to build momentum with another three-run frame in the fourth, highlighted by Ambler's two-RBI triple.
Spring Arbor capped the scoring with three more runs in the fifth to invoke the 10-run mercy rule.
Ambler led the offensive attack, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Clark and Meeker each added two hits.
Emilee Underwood was outstanding in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing just two hits and striking out 11.
Game Two | SAU 10, Judson 0 (5 Innings)
The Cougars carried that momentum into the nightcap. Much like the opener, Spring Arbor opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning – this time off the bat of Ambler.
SAU broke the game open in the second inning, erupting for seven runs highlighted by Luby's two-run homer. The Cougars added two more runs in the fourth to again trigger the run rule.
Ambler finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate while Clark recorded two hits, drove in two runs, and scored twice.
Alexyn DuBois was sharp in the circle, pitching a complete-game shutout to improve to 4-0 on the season. The freshman allowed just one hit while striking out two.
Spring Arbor wraps up its time in Florida on Friday with games against Hastings College and Bismarck State College.
