WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University baseball team split a Crossroads League doubleheader Friday at Grace College, taking the opener 5-3 before falling 4-1 in game two.
The Cougars move to 8-5 overall and 5-1 in Crossroads League play.
Game One | SAU 5, Grace 3
Spring Arbor struck first in the second inning when
Braydon Gregory launched a solo home run to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. SAU added another run in the third as
Connor Reed crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from
Joey Tessmer.
Grace answered with single runs in the third and fourth innings to tie the score at 2-2. The Cougars briefly regained the lead in the fifth, taking advantage of a pair of Lancer errors to go up 3-2, but Grace responded with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning to even the game again.
After two scoreless frames, Spring Arbor broke the deadlock in the eighth.
Connor Dee led off with a double to center field and
Connor Christman, who ran for Dee, later scored on a sacrifice fly by
Zach Adams to put the Cougars ahead 4-3. Another sacrifice fly in the ninth provided an insurance run.
Lucas Dawson closed the door on the mound, retiring the Lancers in order in the ninth to secure the win. Dawson earned the victory with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, striking out three.
Four Cougars recorded multiple hits in the game, including Tessmer, who finished with two RBIs and two stolen bases.
Game Two | Grace 4, SAU 1
The Grace pitching staff was able to slow down SAU in the nightcap, holding the Cougar offense to just one run on three hits.
The Lancers took the lead in the second inning with two runs and added single runs in the fourth and sixth to extend the advantage.
Despite the slow start, the Cougars had an opportunity in the sixth inning.
Nate Dutkowski scored on a sacrifice fly by Tessmer. Later in the inning, SAU loaded the bases with two outs, but the Lancers escaped the jam with no further damage.
Kyler Hinken took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs on nine hits over five innings of work.
Spring Arbor and Grace will conclude the four-game series Monday, Mar. 9 with another doubleheader in Winona Lake, Indiana beginning at 1 p.m.
