SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University softball team split a Crossroads League doubleheader on Saturday, defeating Mount Vernon Nazarene University 6-0 in game one before falling 3-2 in the nightcap on Senior Day.
The Cougars close the regular season at 29-21 overall and finish tied for fourth in the conference standings with a 20-16 record.
In game one, Spring Arbor jumped out early with three runs in the first inning, taking advantage of an MVNU error. The Cougars extended the lead to 6-0 in the fourth behind RBI hits from
Nicole Barbeau and Ambler.
That was more than enough support for
Emilee Underwood, who was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete game shutout while allowing just two hits.
In game two, SAU found itself in a pitcher's duel between
Alexyn DuBois and Mount Vernon Nazarene's Bailey Sheets, with both teams held scoreless through four innings.
Spring Arbor broke through in the fifth when
Anna Kemp delivered a two-RBI single to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
Underwood entered in relief in the sixth, but the Cougars were unable to hold on as MVNU rallied for three runs in the inning to claim the 3-2 win.
Spring Arbor will enter the Crossroads League Tournament as the No. 5 seed and will face No. 8 seed Goshen College in a play-in game on Tuesday, April 28.
