Softball Splits with MVNU on Senior Day

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University softball team split a Crossroads League doubleheader on Saturday, defeating Mount Vernon Nazarene University 6-0 in game one before falling 3-2 in the nightcap on Senior Day.
The Cougars close the regular season at 29-21 overall and finish tied for fourth in the conference standings with a 20-16 record.
Prior to the games, head coach Deb Thompson and the Cougars honored their six seniors – Summer Ambler, Payton Grange, Matajia Cerroni, Kailey Poortenga, Grace Lentz and Lexi Cain.
In game one, Spring Arbor jumped out early with three runs in the first inning, taking advantage of an MVNU error. The Cougars extended the lead to 6-0 in the fourth behind RBI hits from Nicole Barbeau and Ambler.
That was more than enough support for Emilee Underwood, who was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete game shutout while allowing just two hits.
In game two, SAU found itself in a pitcher's duel between Alexyn DuBois and Mount Vernon Nazarene's Bailey Sheets, with both teams held scoreless through four innings.
Spring Arbor broke through in the fifth when Anna Kemp delivered a two-RBI single to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
Underwood entered in relief in the sixth, but the Cougars were unable to hold on as MVNU rallied for three runs in the inning to claim the 3-2 win.
Spring Arbor will enter the Crossroads League Tournament as the No. 5 seed and will face No. 8 seed Goshen College in a play-in game on Tuesday, April 28.
